Photo Forge first: how the Forge suite will be sequenced

The suite will be built one application at a time. Photo Forge comes first, Light Forge second, and the rest of the lineup follows only after real milestones.

Illustrative photograph. It does not show Forge software.

Eleven applications is a long-term ambition, not a launch plan. We would rather ship one tool that works well than eleven that do not. So the suite is sequenced.

The order

  1. Photo Forge: professional raster, vector, and text editing. The only application in active development.
  2. Light Forge: photo library and RAW development.
  3. CinemaForge: video editing.
  4. VectorForge: vector illustration and graphic design.
  5. AudioForge: audio production.

DesignForge, InterfaceForge, PDFForge, WordForge, DeckForge, and GridForge follow later. Their names may still change.

What has to happen first

Light Forge implementation starts only after Photo Forge reaches a release-readiness milestone. Until then, related work is limited to research and to shared imaging components in the Rust engine that also serve Photo Forge directly.

Why this order

Photo Forge exercises almost everything the later applications need: a document model, a History system, color handling, a native engine for heavy pixel work, and an interface that stays responsive. Getting those foundations right once is the fastest way to build everything after it.

The roadmap shows the specific engineering tasks behind each stage.

Brush, eraser, and layer-lock fixes move into review

Three correctness fixes from the October audit are implemented on development branches: painting inside selections, an eraser that truly erases, and enforced layer locks.

MASK1B: painting and editing layer masks

Layer masks can now be painted directly. The Layers panel lets you choose whether you are editing a layer's pixels or its mask.
