Brush, eraser, and layer-lock fixes move into review

Three correctness fixes from the October audit are implemented on development branches: painting inside selections, an eraser that truly erases, and enforced layer locks.

The repository audit published on October 11 found a handful of correctness problems in Photo Forge's painting tools. Fixes for three of them are now implemented on development branches and going through independent review and hands-on testing before they are integrated.

Brush strokes inside a selection (BRUSH-FIX1)

When a selection was active, the brush clipped its strokes incorrectly, so painting outside the first canvas tile had no effect. The fix corrects how the selection clip is applied per tile.

An eraser that erases (ERASER1)

The previous Eraser painted opaque white instead of removing pixels. The new Eraser is built on the same stroke pipeline as the Brush and clears pixels to transparency on pixel layers. Follow-up changes batch stroke updates, repaint only the affected region of the canvas, and share stroke spacing for long continuous strokes.

Layer locks (PAINT-LOCK1 and LOCK-PERSIST1)

Locked layers now refuse painting, with a clear status message instead of a silent no-op. Separate work makes sure the locked state is saved and reopened for every kind of layer.

What "in review" means

None of these fixes is in the main development line yet. Each one still has to pass independent verification and live testing on real hardware before it is merged. The roadmap will show them as Completed only once that has happened.

MASK1B: painting and editing layer masks

Layer masks can now be painted directly. The Layers panel lets you choose whether you are editing a layer's pixels or its mask.

EFFECTS1: Drop Shadow becomes a saved layer effect

Layer effects are now part of the document. Drop Shadow settings survive save and reopen, and shadows are built once per repaint instead of once per tile.
